Genre Project I – Proposal

Purpose

The purpose of a proposal is to put forward ideas for consideration. Normally, these ideas are solutions to a problem. For example, in the short essay called, "A Modest Proposal", Jonathon Swift proposes to Ireland that in order to "....prevent the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or country, make them beneficial to the public" (Swift) by eating them. Though this consideration may sound absurd, the idea of a proposal is to put forward ideas and that is exactly what Jonathon Swift did. Also, another example that achieves the genre of a proposal is, "A Proposal to Review How Geophysical Precursors Can Help Predict Earthquakes", by Christopher Gray. "I propose to review the available literature on how geophysical precursors can be used for short-term predictions of earthquakes" (Gray). This statement clearly shows that the author had an idea to propose and it was up for consideration.

Audience

The target audience for a written proposal should be anyone who is interested in the topic your writing about. Ideally, the audience should be open minded to the suggestions you are proposing. In an article by Ben Kim, titled "Healthy foods that promote restful sleep", he proposes that by eating healthy makes it easier to have a restful nights sleep. He clearly states the audience by saying, "anyone who is having trouble sleeping, this is for you." In another article i read titled "Quit Smoking Cold Turkey", the target audience is obviously anyone who is considering quitting smoking.

Stance

The stance of a proposal should be direct and backed up by credible sources. It should not be contradicting throughout the paper, but still be able to identify the pros and cons of what is being proposed.

Media/Design

The use of media tools in proposals can be very effective. Charts and graphs are a good way to make complex data used in a proposal easier to relate to a reader. Many proposals include at timeline for gathering research data and enacting proposals. A prime example can be found in "High vs. Low Electrical Stimulation Frequencies for Motor Recovery in Hemiplegia." The author includes a chart of the expected time it will take to complete each part of their research proposal. Creating a timeline makes solutions more comprehendable and easier to enact. Since a proposal is writen to convince people of a problem and solution, they are often presented to others. Adding a power point presentation along with a proposal is also useful.

Individual Commentaries

My genre paper relates to most of the key features. My genre paper is about how businesses should not harm the competition around them by buying out the other businesses. In my paper I propose a solution, I have an appropriate tone, a well-defined problem, a call to action, but im not sure if my argument is convincing. I added two sources to show how my argument is convincing. I talked about how in the 19th century there were anti-trust laws that restricted businesses from harming the competition. Also, I believe that my paper is not being presented to the right audience, because students that own businesses can't get the full appreciation of it. This paper should be first sent to businesses and them make its way through the state governments and then to the federal courts. Something that I could improve on this paper is to make my solution more clear. -Alec W.

My proposal paper has all of the key features required. It starts off by introducing a problem, identifying the pros and cons, proposes a solution, and calls for an action. In the paper I talked about diabetes and the the many ways that it can be prevented. I had credible sources and made sure to make my solutions as realistic as possible. This paper is mainly aimed toward adults who want to become more knowledgeable about their health and how to prevent this disease for themselves and others. The target audience could either be individuals or communities; however, to improve the proposal, I would structure it differently to make it more clear. --Ashleigh Collins

My genre paper has a purpose to convince people that homosexuals should be able to marry each other. I do this by using satire to point out the flaws in the reasoning of those who oppose marriage between people of the same sex being religion. I attempt to take the stance of a person who believes that there should not be same sex marriage, although I am unsure if I have still crossed the line from a satire with sarcasm, and hopefully wit, into a diatribe. The target audience for this paper is the people on the fence, unsure of whether the are for or against gay marriage.. - Jessica W.

My proposals purpose is to convince people that a few simple techniques has the ability to reduce the symptoms of depression without prescribed medication. I propose that meditation, dieting, and exercising can help reduce depression and anxiety. I believe that many people who are depressed go straight to the doctor and get prescribed to anti-depressant medications. In the long run most of the people who get put on meds. end up becoming addicted or their symptoms increase. So, this is why i suggest that taking a more naturalistic path may have greater benefits than medication. - Nick W.

My proposal is about the problem of unemployment in the United States and actions that the government can take to correct the problem. First a define the far reaching effects of unemployment and explain how it also affects those who arn't unemployed. I then reveiw situations in the past where unemployment has been high and explain the steps the government took at that time to correct the problem. I take those examples and put them into the context of todays economy and politics and presents possible solutions that both political parties could agree on. Finally I describes ways that individualls can help convince politians to enact those soultutions. - Brian T.
